Twenty pharmacies. most of which are believed to be online pharmacies, were served enforcement notices during 2019-20 after failing to meet the regulator’s standards.
According to the General Pharmaceutical Council, pharmacies were censured for failing to put in place ongoing monitoring of prescriptions for drugs including opiates and sedatives, where there is a risk of addiction. Other failures relate to a lack of checks on the clinical appropriateness of the prescription and insufficient safeguards in place to manage risk.
The annual report also reveals that six pharmacies were issued with improvement notices and one with an interim order of suspension.
The work follows a strengthening of guidance last year for distance selling pharmacies, including those operating online. Regulatory initiatives have also included a programme of priority inspections of online pharmacies.
