Independent prescribing from the point of registration is one of the changes to pharmacist education and training made by the pharmacy regulator.
The General Pharmaceutical Council, which regulates all GB pharmacists, has also mandated changes to the standards of pharmacist education and training that:
- emphasise clinical standards, as well as professional judgement, management of risk, and diagnostic and consultation skills
- having a greater emphasis on equality, diversity and inclusion
The chief pharmaceutical officers for GB say independent prescribing skills will enable pharmacists to “play a much bigger part in caring for patients with long term health conditions, in partnership with patients, carers and other members of the healthcare team”.
They have called on the pharmacy regulator to reform the education and training of pharmacy technicians.
