In his 2020 annual conference presentation, Recapturing prescription growth in the dispensary, DDA Board member Mark Stone explained how to turn declining dispensing volumes into a 9.2 per cent average six-month growth.
In the presentation, Mr Stone, a pharmacist partner at Tamar Valley Health Practice, DDA Board member and East Cornwall PCN vice chair explained the practice’s strategy to halt an average 5 per cent loss in dispensary volumes following increased uptake of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) and COVID-19.
The practice’s plan combines four elements:
- Enhancing easy access for patients to prescription services, including delivery service, expanded eligibility and prescription drop off points
- Communications plan of dispensary services and benefits
- Improvement of the practice prescribing system, including cessation of automated third party prescribing requests
- Communications plan for changes to practice prescription ordering process.
Explaining the practice’s rationale, Mr Stone said: “Declining dispensary volumes show that patients are choosing to go elsewhere; that you are not meeting their needs. You do need to take note and adjust. Get it right and you will see dispensing grow.”
