Clinicians and dispensers are advised that Stanek (levodopa/carbidopa/entacapone) tablets (various strengths) are out of stock until mid-June/end-July.
Supplies of Sastravi or Stalevo tablets, which are considered equivalent, continue to remain available. Clinicians should consider prescribing levodopa/carbidopa/entacapone tablets generically: medicines for Parkinson’s disease are not mandated to be prescribed by brand, although this may suit some very brittle patients.
In the event of a shortage, the maintenance of supply of the drug is more important than the brand; and switching of brands is preferable to changing a patient’s regimen.
When switching brands, patients should be reassured that they are receiving the same treatment, counselled on any changes and monitored for side effects/change in disease control.
The NHS has also updated the resupply dates for a number of drugs.
