Welsh pharmacies eye up controlled areas

Three out of the four pharmacy applications granted in Wales in 2014-15 were in controlled areas, new pharmacy services figures for Wales show.

As of March 31, 2015, the net size of the community pharmacy network in Wales stood at 716 pharmacies, an increase of two on the previous year.

The statistics also show that proportion of independent pharmacies has dropped from 43.1% in 2006-07 to 34.9% in 2014-15. There are now 250 independent pharmacies.

In total Welsh pharmacies dispensed 73.2 million prescription items in 2014- 15, up by 2.9% from 2013-14.

Looking at trends in applications to controlled areas, the Welsh pharmacy reports show increasing interest in rural areas; in 2012-13, there were no applications to controlled areas, and in 2013-14, controlled area applications represented over one in fourĀ applications (5/22). At September 2015, there were 82 dispensing GP practices in Wales, a drop of two on December 2014.

GP data shows that the average dispensing list size in Wales is 2,368 out of an average total practice patient list size of 6,132. The average dispensing practice has four GPs.
