The RCGP has published workload prioritisation guidance, identifying dispensing as a core activity that should be continued “regardless of the scale of the virus outbreak”.

The guidance rates routine GP activity as red, amber and green, depending on importance to public health. Dispensing is rated as green, which relates to activities of highest value to health.

The list is not exhaustive and is not intended to replace clinical judgement for individual patient cases.
Past experience has shown that patients will die from non-COVID-19 related illnesses in addition to COVID-19 itself as health care resources are diverted away from regular activity. GPs are told: “It is vital that we continue to provide care to all patients if we have the capacity, with workloads stratified to ensure that those at greatest need are prioritised.”

NHS England & Improvement have also published online SOPs for the management of COVID-19 in general practice.

  • There is also reminder advice about strengthening CD security, in light of increased risk of break-ins. This is due to COVID-related travel restrictions, which have reduced the availability of illicit sources.
